In Fall of 2015, our school embarked on a community garden. We started a school-wide composting program including building a compost system and teaching all students and staff to take organic food scraps to be recycled into important nutrients for our future plants. Students built 16 raised beds, started a container garden, planted multiple indigenous perennial plants, and established our site as an official Monarch Butterfly Way-station, providing important shelter and food for Monarchs on their annual journey to Mexico. Students continue to research and tend our flourishing gardens. In August of 2016, students are now able to reap the rewards of their hard work and harvest vegetables and herbs from their garden in order to feed their families. Below are some pictures of this important community effort.
